Jonathan 2027: PDP Warns Members Over Tinubu Endorsements, Lamido Demands Wike, Ortom’s Expulsion
The internal storm within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is intensifying as fresh moves emerge to draft former President Goodluck Jonathan into the 2027 presidential race.
Party insiders say the push is part of underground efforts to position Jonathan as the PDP’s flag bearer, especially after the party zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South.
The PDP National Working Committee (NWC) yesterday issued a stern warning to members who have publicly endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election, describing such moves as anti-party activities capable of weakening the party’s unity and electoral strength.
Without naming names, the NWC’s caution comes amid public endorsements of Tinubu by prominent PDP figures, including FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, ex-Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, and Ogun PDP leaders.
Citing the PDP Constitution, the NWC warned that any member aligning with rival parties risks sanctions, including expulsion. The committee also urged members to stay focused ahead of the party’s national convention scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan.
Former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido took it a step further, calling for the immediate expulsion of Wike, Ortom, and other PDP leaders he accused of openly working against the party in 2023. Speaking on Channels Television, Lamido said the era of impunity in PDP must end, insisting the party should “woo Jonathan back” as its strongest candidate for 2027.
Meanwhile, Niger Delta leaders have weighed in on the zoning debate, warning against any attempt to shift power back to the North before 2031. They argue that the South must complete its rotation, citing fairness, stability, and national unity as key reasons.
However, constitutional questions remain over Jonathan’s eligibility, with Section 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution limiting those who have served as president twice to only one additional term.
The political battle lines for 2027 are now clearer: the PDP is fighting to hold its southern ticket, Jonathan’s loyalists are pushing for his comeback, and party rebels may soon face the axe.
