In a major political twist ahead of the 2027 general elections, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly appointed Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, the current Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, as the new National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The decision, insiders say, was reached following a high-level meeting at the Presidential Villa, Aso Rock, on Wednesday night involving Tinubu, members of the APC Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), and other top party stakeholders. The announcement is expected to be ratified at today’s crucial National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja.

Yilwatda’s emergence comes days after the resignation of the former chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who stepped down due to reported health concerns. His exit opened up heated debates within the APC over power rotation, religious balancing, and internal reform.

A senior member of the APC’s National Working Committee (NWC), who spoke to Arewa News Flash under anonymity, described Yilwatda’s appointment as strategic and deliberate, noting that the party sought a more democratic and technocratic figure to steer its affairs — not another traditional political heavyweight.

“This is not just about politics; it’s about correcting certain imbalances and building fresh trust within the party. Yilwatda is a Christian from Plateau, a North-Central state. That’s a strong statement ahead of 2027,”the source said.

Born on August 8, 1968, in Dungung, Kanke Local Government of Plateau State, Nentawe Yilwatda is an accomplished academic, engineer, and public servant. He previously served as the APC governorship candidate in Plateau Stateduring the 2023 general elections and was once appointed as a Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Benue State under the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Yilwatda is a registered engineer with COREN and a member of several professional bodies, including the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, the Nigerian Society of Engineers, and the Solar Society of Nigeria.

Political analysts believe his appointment may help calm internal agitations within the North-Central APC bloc, who have long complained of marginalization in the party’s power-sharing structure. Many also interpret the move as Tinubu’s attempt to rebrand the APC leadership and bridge faith-based gaps in its national hierarchy.

With 2027 on the horizon and the polity heating up once again, the appointment of Yilwatda may signal a shift toward technocratic leadership, religious inclusion, and regional equity — themes many believe will shape the tone of the next elections.
