Abuja, 22nd August 2025 – The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has raised the alarm and activated urgent flood preparedness measures for communities along the River Niger.
In response to rising water levels reported upstream in the Republic of Benin, the Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has issued a strong directive to all operational offices covering vulnerable communities.
She ordered immediate sensitization campaigns, urging residents in flood-prone areas of Kebbi, Niger, and Kwara States to move to safer, higher grounds.
Mrs. Umar also called on State Governments to rally support for their State and Local Emergency Management Committees, stressing the need for swift activation of contingency plans to minimize loss of lives and property.
“NEMA remains fully committed to coordinated actions that will safeguard lives and livelihoods across the River Niger,” she reaffirmed.
With flood alerts intensifying, the agency is urging citizens in high-risk zones to remain vigilant and act without delay.
